Awovarsity Taekwondo Klub (ATK) was founded in September 1977 at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) by George Opeoluwa Akinola, the club’s first president. Starting as an informal gathering of martial arts enthusiasts from diverse disciplines—including Taekwondo, Karate, and Shokukai—ATK emerged as a formal organization driven by discipline, camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence.

In its early days, the club faced challenges, including skepticism from the university community and limited recognition. Despite these obstacles, the founding members laid a solid foundation, drafting a constitution, setting rigorous training standards, and fostering an inclusive culture. The club’s focus eventually shifted entirely to Taekwondo, following a surge in skilled practitioners and the global rise of Taekwondo as a sport.

Over the years, ATK has achieved numerous milestones, earning a reputation for excellence in competitions, hosting national and international figures, and producing alumni who have excelled in leadership, athletics, and life. Today, the club remains a pillar of discipline and skill, offering students a platform to grow physically, mentally, and socially.

With a legacy of over 30 years, Awovarsity Taekwondo Klub continues to thrive, embodying the principles of humility, perseverance, and an indomitable spirit.
